Detective Comics #981 thoughts on the issue and the series

I may have mentioned this once or twice or nineteen times, but I have fricken LOVED James Tynion IV’s run on Detective Comics. Ever since it began it has been one of the highlights of Rebirth and ever since Rucka left Wonder Woman it has been the best thing DC’s been publishing, which is really saying something in the current era.
I’ll begin with the final issue, which is great. Really my only criticism is that I wish it had been two issues, one dealing with the defeat of Ulysses and another being the prologue to the series where everyone says goodbye. But as it is it’s epic and heartwarming stuff. Batwoman and Tim Drake hug, Tim having been saved from Brother Eye’s influence, Spoiler punches the General in his stupid face, and Cassandra Cain affirms herself as “A Bat” as Batman stands by her side and smiles. And that’s just the first half of the issue.
The second half is everyone saying goodbye. My favorite moment was Cassandra meeting Barbara as her tutor, in a nod to their relationship back in her own series. But there’s also a heartwarming moment of Bruce saying goodbye to Tim, wishing him luck on his journey and saying he’ll always have a home at Wayne Manor. And finally Bruce and Kate reconcile completely over dinner, Bruce saying he wants Kate in his life and he’ll accept her and the decisions she makes. It’s one of the most emotionally mature deprivations of Batman I’ve ever seen.
So Detective Comics #981 was a wonderful end to a wonderful run. Tynion IV brought together many of the best characters in the Bat-Family and gave them each brilliant and amazing moments in the sun. This was a Batman series that didn’t prioritize Batman, it understand that many of the people in his supporting cast are as interesting and beloved as he is, if not more so. It gave amazing exposure to Cassandra Cain, one of my favorite comic characters ever. Tynion IV treated them like a group of equals who loved and respected each other.
And as for Batman it’s one of the best depictions of him I’ve ever read. He was likeable, human, and mature, and when he wasn’t those things he was shown to be in the wrong and later apologizes for some of his behavior!
I could gush forever about how awesome this series was. If I had any complaints it’s that it had a frequent issue of a great villian or threat being set up and then taken down a tad but too easily at the end of the arc. But that’s my only major quibble. Tynion IV’s run will forever be my standard that every other Batman series has to live up to.
I might be more upset about him leaving, but Brian Edward Hill’s taking over the series and paring Bruce with fricken BLACK LIGHTNING!! Batman and Black Lightning? Um, yes please!!!

The DC trinity is a Jewish anti-gun activist, an undocumented immigrant whose arch-nemesis is a billionaire industrialist, and a bisexual feminist pacifist.

Assassin’s Creed’s premise is literally “history is inaccurate and was rewritten by the Templars” and the titular creed is “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.” but suddenly diehard AC fans are incredibly angry at a female Greek warrior…because they think it’s untrue (even though there were female Greek warriors) and wouldn’t have been permitted.
Yup, this is totally about historical accuracy and not misogyny at all.
